Aluva is different from other cities due to its specialities. Years back Aluva became the gateway of Kerala as the trains from North came only up to Aluva. So people from Travancore and Cochin came to Aluva to travel to other cities of india. The industrial developments of Aluva attracted youth to the industries in and around Aluva. The
famous river Periyar is passing through it, the famous Sivarathri is being celebrated on its banks and kalady the birth place of Srisankaracharia makes it ‘ Purna’. The People from different olaces reside tigenther with good cooperation, friendship and fellowship. Therefore many ecumenical institutions and organization originated in Aluva, which is
congenical to the ecumenucal growth, Y.M.C.A, Y.W.C.A, K.C.C., U.C. College, Settlement, Christhava Mahilalayam, Fellowship house and our institution, “ The School for the Blind” are examples. The Kerala Blind school Society is a voluntary association of like minded persons, hailing from the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church and the Church of South India. The society is registered under the Travancore – Co.chin
Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, Its office and service centre are situated at Keezhmadu, 7 Kilometers from Aluva, Kerala. The management of the society and its services are vested in a 18 member governing council elected by General Body. All the members are persons of emienence in the community. The society serves the
visually handicapped children and adolescents in a spirit of love, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and sex. A meeting of Kerala Christian Coucil took the initiative to start a school for visually challenged in Kerala. The Kerala Blind School Society established in 1962 is the pioneer in the field of education and rehabilitation of the visually
challenged in the state of Kerala. When education of the visually challenged was even unheard of, and they were neglected men with deep social concern and commitment dared in to great and risky because they had no financial reserves. But with profound faith of God and men, the school for the blind was started in a rented building near
Union Christian College aluva. After a few years the school was shifted to its own premises at Keezhmad. This time we remember with thanks the founder members Mr. Appumemenon, Mr. W. O. George, mr. P. A. Mathew, Tr. Rev. T. B. Benjamin and Rev. C. I. Mathunni (First manager). We are thankful to the Organisations which helped the
school on initial stage. The Rotary Club, IAC, U.C.C. College, Christava Mahilalayam, YMCA, YWCA, Mar Athenasious Arts Club, Fine Arts Club, National Christian Council, K.C.C. Christian Children fund, Chritoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) etc., hasve extended a helping hand. Le 1968 the land at Keezhmadu, 2.25 Acres was registred in the name of the society and constructed own building for the School. The first visit of CBM was in 1967 and CBM helped us from the starting stage till now. We are thankful to CBM for their kind help extended to us. On 1968 October 2 Rt. Rev. T.B. Benjamin the President
of K.C.C. laid foundation stone of the School; On 1969 October 2 the consecration of School was done by Rt. Rev. T.B. Benjamin, Bishop of CSI and inauguration of School was done by Hon. Justice M.U. Issac. The meeting was presided over by Hon. Justice, P. Sumbramanen Potty. In the beginning only boys were admitted in this school from std 1 to 7. From the year 1971 different craft tarining were given to the students; From 1922 the school admitted girls in this school. On 1973 August 12 the honorable Governor of Kerala Sri. N.N. Vanchu inaugurated the boys hostel and on 1984 March 6 the dining hall was inaugurated by great educational Mr. W.A. Stein (CBM). The school bus was also donated by CBM. 1196 May 22 the foundation of the C.B.M. hall was laid by Rt. Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilose Metropolitan and on 1996 December 9 the CBM hall was Inaugurated by the CBM Regional Representative Mr. Clodia Koeing. On 1997 February 12 the new school building foundation stone was laid by Rt. Rev. Philipose Mar Chrystosem
Metropolitan. The display centre and telephone booth were consecrated by rt. Rev. Geevarghiese Mar Athanasious Episcopa on 10th January 2000. The retaining wall of ORBIK was constructed from the fund of Hon. M.P. sri. K. P. Dhanapalan and was completed in September 2010. The official meeting of MP fund utilization was done on 14th November 2010 at the school campus. With the support of the CBM we consecration of the building was done by Rt. Rev. Issac Mar Plexinose Episcopa on 14th Feb. 2009 at 10 AM. FISAT an engineering college near, Aluva donated the open air theatre. Computers for visually challenged, furnishing of the computer lab etc are taken care of
by the Rotary club of Cochin Midtown. A computer course affiliated to C- DIT of Govt. of Kerala was inaugurated by Sri. K. Babu the Honorable Minister of excise and ports on 30th July 2011. The Foundation Stone of the Golden Jubilee Girls Hostel was laid by Rt. Rev. Yuhanon Mar Polycarpose on 15th sep. 2010. The work of the hostel has been completed. The Formal Inauguration of 6500 Sq. feet Hostel will take place during concluding ceremony of Golden jibilee. The Petronet L.N.G. donated a new School Bus. The official hand over by Sri. P. I. Shaik Pareed, Hon. District Collector of Ernakulam Sri. A. K. Bilylan, M.D. and C.E.O. of the Petronet L.N.G. handed over ther key to the Manager, Sri. Varughese Alexander on 13th March 2012. Students of Rajagiri school donated Rs. 1.25 lakhs for purchase of furniture to the students.

Residential School

From its very inception it was a residential school. All students receive education, boarding and lodging totally free. They are provided with clothing, books, education and treatment through out their study period. Team of competent and committed teachers and non teaching staff take care of them. Funds for running the school comes
from generous public and institutions. At present there are 72 students from nursery to std 10. For the past several years a noble family donates. Onakkody (New dress) to the children during Onam (Kerala’s National festival) (See the Photograph).
Our children are very good in their academic performance. Students passing out of VII Std. in the residential school are sent to the near by High school for higher studies. They undergo integrated Education. They are encouraged to complete successfully their high school studies. All their needs are met by the society. Our children have won remakable prizes in sports, games and arts, and work experience competition for the visually challenged students at the state level. They have won championship in work experience competition for years togenther also. (see the photographs) Our students have always won laurels at state level sports and games. We are the piopneers in introducing cricket for the Blind. Sri. Srisanth former Member of Indian Cricket Team visited the school and interacted and played with our children. He has donated Rs. 1 Lakh to the school. The
school has won all india Championship in sports held at Chennai under the auspices of Chennai YMCA. We are proud of the histrionic talents of our students they have won championship in the state level Youth festival consecutively for years. Our pride, Kumari asna has won special jury award for the best Child Actor at the National Film festival last year. She received the award from the President of India. She was given a rousing
Reception at the school. The Hon. minister of Education, Kerala State, Mr. M.A. Baby personally was present in the Reception (see the Photograph) Asna was honores by the children’s film Festival. (see the news paper cuttings). We have a very good band troop. They are always the hot favorite of the public. (see the photograph). ORBIK- Organization for Rehabilitation of the Blind in Kerala is an innovation of the Kerala Blind School
Society. The cornerstone of the ORBIK was laid by Sri. K. karunakaran former Chief Minister on 2/10/1983 and inauguration done by Sri. M.M. jacob, Chairman of Rajyasabha on 6/9/1986. It is the skills development and vocational training unit of the society. In order to provide daily living and wage earning skills to the trainees, basic crafts like tailoring, caning of chairs, paper craft (note book and envelop making) etc. have been introduced. Of kllate, we have started a computer training centre also. The traineers in ORBIK get their boarding, lodging and medical aid free. In addition, they get a small stipend also.
Recognizing the yeoman service rendered to the cause of the Blind in Kerala, the Govt. of Kerala gave Recognition to our school in 1995 and now the school is an Aided school-up to VII standards). Our students have always secured 100% pass in SSLC examination.

We are proud of our former students. Some of them are professors, Ph. D. holders. One of them is a popular by the P. A. Syed Mohammed Foundation by sponsoring the Award for the Best community service in 2006-2007. The Kerala blind School Society, the pioneer in thew field of education of the visually challenged, is 50 years old. As part of its Golden Jubilee Projects, the Society is launching a B.Ed college of Special Education,
to impart training to graduates to enable them to teach and train the visually challenged.
